Expert and journalist group Bellingcat, an investigative open data, produced the report Russia’s War in Ukraine: medals and treacherous figures.
Experts point out that from 2014 to 2015 has dramatically increased the number of awarded medals “for military merit”.
From 7 November 2014 to 18 February 2016, the Russian military handed over 4300 medals “For military merits”. Based on the photos of the medals in social networks, their serial numbers and other sources Bellingcat said that 2014 was awarded more than ten thousand medals.
“Accordingly, we can conclude the following: in 2014-2015, thousands of Russian soldiers took part in combat and were awarded medals”, – the report says.
While medals are not awarded to all military, Bellingcat said. In November-December 2014 in the Russian Federation has awarded over 60 medals in the day, and from 10 to 16 December, the Russian military received more than 70 medals daily.
Russia has occupied the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in 2014 year. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially declared on 20 February 2014 beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia. Key international organizations, including the UN General Assembly has condemned Russia’s actions and called the annexation and occupation of Crimea illegal. Against Russia were imposed economic sanctions.
After the capture of the Crimea Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine has continued in the Donbas region, where Moscow has created terrorist organizations DNR and LNR, seized with the support of the Russian part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Both organizations are funded and maintained by Russia, where, among other things, the terrorists are getting fighters, trainers, and heavy equipment, weapons, ammunition, and fuel.
