In March 2014 the IRS has defined Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as property, which allowed to exchange “assets of a similar nature” without paying taxes. However, from 1 January 2018 to article 1031 would apply only to the estate.
The definition of “property” reaches “tangible property”, and cryptocurrencies are not within its ambit.
