Hungary is in favour of closer ties with Russia and hopes to improve relations with the United States during the administration of President Donald trump, whose criticism of NATO strategy for combating terrorism, the Budapest parts. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siyatro in an interview with Reuters.
It is reported that in the coming days, Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Budapest to discuss closer energy ties between the countries.
Siyatro also said that sanctions against Russia are not effective and they need to cancel.
“The position of Hungary in relation to sanctions is that (they – ed.) useless. We should be happy that Russia’s economy is falling? No, we are sorry about that, ” he said, and stressed that Budapest does not consider Moscow as a threat.
As specified by journalists, Hungary, member of NATO and the EU, remained in good relations with Russia under the regime of sanctions imposed after the annexation of Crimea and the subsequent war in the Donbass.
27 January US President Donald trump, answering the question about the possible lifting of sanctions against Russia, noted that “it is too early to talk about this.”
