French and Spanish intelligence agencies in a joint operation arrested one of the last leaders of the armed organization of the Basque separatists ETA. Mikel Irastorza was arrested in the town of Ascain, Pyrenees Atlantiques, South-West France, reports Euronews.
ETA announced the cessation of the armed struggle in 2011, but refused to surrender their weapons and disband. Mikel Irastorza led the organization in September 2015 after the arrest of his predecessors, David PLA and Iratxe of Sortovala.
12 October of this year French and Spanish security services were found in the North of Paris large cache of weapons and explosives belonging to ETA.
In the investigation of cases of terrorism, which is held by the French Prosecutor’s office, Mikel Irastorza and three other suspects will be transported to Paris.
