A man in a knife attack on Monday evening, November 27, the mayor of the German city of Altena – Andreas Holstein, reports Deutsche Welle.
As reported, Prime Minister of North Rhine – Westphalia, Armin Lachet, “law enforcement believes that the attackers were guided by political motives”.
Accurate background of the offender, however, is not yet established. The city Prosecutor’s office, Hagen promised November 28 to disclose more detailed information about the attack on the policy.
The mayor Altena Andreas Holstein (CDU) is known for its policy of accepting larger number of refugees than required by the applicable quotas for the distribution of migrants between cities and communes of North Rhine – Westphalia.
The incident occurred at a mobile kiosk with Shawarma. According to the newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, unknown, apparently, was in a condition of alcoholic intoxication, said the politician, whether he is the mayor of the city, and then stabbed him. The offender also expressed insults to the policy of the head of the city Council.
Injured Holstein were assisted at the scene and then the ambulance was taken to the hospital. Before night he was discharged and was able to leave the hospital.
Holstein is not the first politician who is attacked, presumably for his policy towards refugees. In October 2015, the 44-year-old man with a knife attacked Henrietta recker, who was a candidate for the post of chief burgomaster of Cologne. Later it turned out that the offender was a member of the extreme right wing of the party and participated in marches of neo-Nazis.
