Victoria became the first state in Australia in which legalized voluntary euthanasia for terminally ill people, that is assisting the person in his conscious desire to die. It is reported by the Australian TV channel ABC.
The new law developed by the state government and passed by the lower chamber of the local Parliament, will be submitted to the Governor-General of Australia for approval. The document will come into force in 2019.
Euthanasia will be available for residents of Victoria who reside in the state for at least a year, are of sound mind and suffering from incurable diseases, those suffering can’t get any other valid way.
Wishing to die will be able to obtain a lethal drug for 10 days from the date of filing the relevant application, after passing through a certain procedure, which includes two independent medical evaluation.
“The patient must self-administer the drug, but the doctor may introduce a lethal dose in the rare cases when someone is physically unable to commit suicide”, – is spoken in the message of the media.

The law also provides for 68 guarantees, including the new criminal law is to protect vulnerable people from abuse and coercion, as well as the creation of a special Board to review all cases on this issue.
