Next year we can expect increased international pressure on Russia by increasing sanctions and increasing aid to Ukraine in the security sphere. This was stated by Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin in an interview with Voice of America.

“In the EU begin to understand that we need the other steps, because Russia is waging war not only against Ukraine, but against the institutions of the European Union. Spain, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Germany are more talking about the fact that this situation is unacceptable. Next year is expected to increase pressure on Russia”, – said Klimkin.

He also welcomed the recent decision of Canada, which will allow Ukraine to buy canadian weapons.

“The sanctions that should apply in the United States next year, will be very effective”, – the Minister added.

Klimkin, however, do not have high hopes for increasing the efficiency of the Minsk format, “it’s not format – he says, – we are constantly working with Germany and France. Constantly working with the United States, and from what we something move on the table – are not changing. But the bottom line is that Russia wants to keep its protectorate in the Donbas in any way, and yet she will not give it up, there will be no progress”.

The Minister stressed that the UN peacekeeping mission is necessary in the situation in the Donbass.

“Ukraine and international partners share common views on the appropriate mandate of a peacekeeping mission, but Russia is trying to change tactics and jump out from all formats where it is, to create the impression that everything that happens in Ukraine is an internal conflict,” – said Klimkin.

Earlier, on December 16, Klimkin at a meeting in new York with UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres discussed the prospects of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbass.
