The European Union should block the gas pipeline project Nord stream-2, which will give the Kremlin’s geopolitical and financial leverage on Germany, Poland and Slovakia. This was stated by the head of the state company Naftogaz Andrey Kobelev in an interview with Reuters.

“We urge our European partners to try to look not on immediate consequences, and one step forward, what will happen later, after the Nord Stream-2 will be launched,” – said Kobolyev.

According to him, the annual capacity of the planned underwater pipeline, which is 55 billion cubic meters will lead to an equivalent drop in the volume of gas that now pumped through Ukraine and Poland, and completely kill the supply route

“I don’t think it has anything to do with diversification or an increase in security of supply. This means an increase of the dominant position of Gazprom in this part of Europe,” he said.

KOBOLEV added that the European countries should be more careful in their decisions, leading to greater dependence on Russia.

13 December 2016, the head of Naftogaz said that the project Nord stream 2 is currently frozen. In turn, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said that the Russian side does not see risks for the financing of the pipeline. According to him, the project goes according to plan, and all participants have confirmed their participation in the project.

Project Nord stream-2 involves the construction of two pipelines to bypass Ukraine with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas off the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. It was planned that Gazprom will own 50% in the project, European companies OMV, BASF, Engie, Shell, Uniper (isolated from E. On) – 10%. The new pipeline they want to build near the Northern stream.

Currently about one third of Gazprom supplies to Europe goes through Ukraine.
