During a telephone conversation Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to approve the date for a new meeting in Normandy format. According to the report, the sides also discussed the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements “from war to elections.”

“The focus was the question of the implementation of the Minsk agreements in Ukraine, particularly, strengthening of ceasefire, withdrawal of troops and the necessary further steps including the possibility of holding local elections,” said Seibert.

The parties stressed the importance of further work to create the conditions for a possible meeting of heads of States and governments in the Normandy format, said the spokesman. The leaders agreed that this should be progress has been made in security and political aspects. “The decision to hold such a meeting it was accepted not” – he said.

Another topic of conversation was the situation in Syria. The Chancellor and the French President once again underlined the importance of ceasefire and access to humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the population.
