Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel recalled that the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia in connection with the annexation of Crimea and the armed support of the Moscow militants in the Donbass. She stated this at a campaign event of the Christian democratic party in Schwerin, Deutsche Welle reports.
She has strongly criticized Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, stressing that no one is allowed with impunity to redraw the borders in Europe.
Merkel was stunned when the first Russian tank crossed the Ukrainian border. “Today we are not talking about the same tank, but about very, very many tanks,” said the Chancellor of Germany.
In her opinion, due to Russia’s support of the separatists, there was not a single day that would respect the cease-fire in Eastern Ukraine.
Merkel stressed that the sanctions waiver would be in the interests of Russia and Germany. “I am extremely interested in ending the sanctions,” Merkel said and added that their abolition directly dependent on the implementation by Moscow of Minsk agreements. “In a time when we will achieve progress in implementing the Minsk agreements, sanctions will be weakened,” said the Federal Chancellor.
