NATO countries opposed the conclusion of a new UN Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons. The corresponding statement by the North Atlantic Council has published the press service of the Alliance.

“We encourage our partners and all countries that are considering support for this Treaty, to think seriously about its implications for international peace and security,” – said in a statement, NATO.

The Council of the Alliance also expresses the opinion that a new Treaty banning nuclear weapons “ignores the realities of an increasingly complex international security environment.”

“At a time when the world must remain United in the face of growing threats, in particular the serious threat posed by the nuclear program of North Korea, the Treaty does not take into account these pressing security issues”, – stated in the published document.

The Treaty for the prohibition of nuclear weapons opened for signature on 20 September in new York, according to Deutsche Welle. It was adopted on 7 July this year in the headquarters of the UN and will enter into force when ratified by 50 States.
