An international group of scientists studying space, announced the discovery of the planet Proxima b, which can be a life and which can be reached during future space missions. A little more planet Earth is only four light years from it, said scientists at a press conference at the headquarters of the European southern Observatory. It is reported in the journal Nature.
Proxima b orbits the star Proxima Centauri. This star is included in the system alpha Centauri is a red dwarf. A complete revolution around the star it makes for 11 days.
The planet is in the so-called habitable zone of a star. The temperature of the planet is such that it can be water in liquid form, and the climate suitable for life.
Proxima b, thus, became the closest planet to the Solar system where life is possible.
The study authors explain that the noticed signs of the planet in 2013, and then tried to obtain evidence of its existence. Proxima b is to the star much closer than Earth or even mercury. But Proxima Centauri was much dimmer star than the Sun.
Scientists do not exclude that the planet has a “tropical belt” – a Sunny place, where the water is. The climate of Proxima b is very different from earth. For example, the scientists doubt that the planet the seasons are changing.
Previously, the closest to the Solar system the planet on which life can be, considered a planet of Wolf 1061c, located in the constellation of Ophiuchus. It is in the habitable zone of the star Wolf 1061, which is a red dwarf, and is approximately 13.7 light-years from Earth.
