Brussels wants to block investment in the project Nord stream-2 (Nord Stream 2) by changing the gas Directive.
According to the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, in late November the European Commission will initiate a review of the gas Directive – the rules of the third energy package can cover projects such as Nord stream-2. As the newspaper notes, the new requirements should be applied to all projects that will be launched from 1 January 2018.
If these rules will come into effect, Gazprom will be obliged to comply with them. This in turn will make the Nord Stream project 2 unprofitable, the newspaper said. The European Commission is now continuing the consultations on the planned changes.
“If they get support of the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and approve the majority of MEPs and EU governments, it would mean the end of Russia’s efforts to monopolize the supply of gas to Europe, bypassing Ukraine”, – stated in the article.
