The American branch of the international human rights organization of writers PEN International awarded Ukrainian prisoner-Director Oleg Sentsova annual award Barbara goldsmith, which is given to “prisoners of conscience”. This writes the newspaper The Washington Post.

“It’s an honor bestowed with a heavy irony: PEN America has just awarded the prize “Freedom to write” well-known Ukrainian film Director and screenwriter Oleg Sentsov, who is in detention in Russia”, – writes the edition.

Sentsov was an outspoken critic of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the article says. The Ukrainian joined the list of other winners, who are in danger and caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Among them, Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova, arrested after investigation of corruption in the government, and economist Ilham Tohti, who in China was imprisoned for speaking out on the subject of the Uighurs.

“He was forced to sacrifice a promising career in film because of the decision not to remain silent. This is the clearest illustration of the intolerance for dissent of Putin’s regime,” said Executive Director, Suzanne Nossel.

According to the newspaper, 37 of the 40 winners of the contest “Freedom to write” got freedom for one and a half years from the date of awarding.

In 2014, Sentsov was arrested in Crimea and transferred to a prison in Moscow: the FSB accused him of “preparing terrorist acts”. In 2015, the court sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime. Accomplice Sentsova Russian investigators have made Pro-Ukrainian activist Oleksandr Kolchenko – he was given 10 years in a strict regime colony. In October 2016, Russia has denied Ukraine the results Sentsov, followed by Kol’chenko.

All charges are political prisoners call nonsense. Human rights organizations consider the verdict unfounded and politically motivated.
