The Ministry of foreign Affairs expresses strong protest to the Russian foreign Ministry in connection with the encroachments of the Russian Orthodox Church to the Ukrainian UNESCO world heritage site “Ancient city of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora”. This reports the press service of the Ukrainian foreign Ministry.
The Ministry demanded from the Russian Federation as of the state exercising temporary illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory, to ensure the implementation of its obligations under international law.
The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in particular, notes that in the list of UNESCO world heritage site, Ukrainian object Chersonese requires a special protection regime under the provisions of the UNESCO Convention.
The note also draws attention to the provisions of the Convention on the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict of 1954, under which the state carries out the occupation, is obliged to provide appropriate protection for cultural values and respect for them.
23 January 2017, it was reported that the Crimean and Simferopol diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church claims the 24 object of the Museum-reserve Chersonese. Church representatives said that soon will send the appropriate documents necessary to transfer to reserve Church property.
