The Russian Federation has effectively delivered an ultimatum to the leadership of the Council of Europe: or it returns a delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the COE, or Moscow will not pay membership dues to this organization. About this in Facebook wrote the President of the PACE Committee on culture, science, education and media Vladimir Aryev.
“Today, we in the group of the EPP (European people’s party – ed.) came the COE Secretary General thorbjørn Jagland and openly declared that after Russia’s refusal to make membership contributions to the organization could keep valuables or to keep the Council of Europe,” he said.
According to the Ukrainian delegate, the visit of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe – “the attempt of the Supreme head of the COE to convince to yield to direct blackmail” Russia. Representatives of Ukraine, Georgia and Lithuania, says the Aryans, “gave a harsh answer,” Jagland, since “without the values of democracy and protection of human rights of the COE will turn into blah-blah-club”.
“But a group of socialists thinks that we should give up and sell an indulgence for the restoration of funding,” – said a member of the EPP faction in PACE.
The MP claimed that such processes explain the attempt by some neighboring countries “arrival to Ukraine” because of the education act. All the old-timers of the Council of Europe, Aryev says, “clearly noted” special political background to this question.
