Omar al-Bashir against whom the International criminal court issued an arrest warrant for charges of genocide in Darfur, has said it wants to increase military ties with Russia. He also supported the Russian military campaign in Syria.
“We are grateful to Russia for its position in the international arena, including the position of Russia in the field of protection of the Sudan. We need protection from the aggressive actions of the United States,” – said the President of the Sudan.
He also added that he agreed with the Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu about Russia’s participation in modernization of the armed forces of Sudan.
The visit occurred a month after the United States lifted a trade embargo, which they imposed on the impoverished African state in 1997 by the Sudan Islamists.
The President of the United States Donald trump recently also removed Sudan from the list of countries who faced the travel ban in the United States.
The war in the Sudanese province of Darfur, accompanied by the ethnic cleansing began in 2003. According to the UN, 2.5 million people became refugees, 300 thousand killed. Omar al-Bashir does not recognize his involvement in the outbreak of ethnic cleansing.
