The Greek army was in a state of high alert on Sunday, when a Turkish military vessel with the chief of Turkish General staff Hulusi Akar on Board went into the territorial waters of Greece. It is reported by the Greek newspaper Ekathimerini.

The Turkish gunboat was accompanied by several assault boats military on Board. They passed near the Islands of IMIA that 21 years ago almost led to war between Greece and Turkey.

The Greek government responded to these actions by calling them a provocation of the Turks and sent its warship to accompany the Turkish fleet in the territorial waters of Greece.

The Greek authorities regard the incident as a provocation in response to the decision of the Supreme court of Greece, which last week rejected a request by Ankara for the extradition of eight Turkish soldiers accused of involvement in the coup attempt in the summer of 2016.

16 July 2016 military helicopter Turkey landed in the city of Alexandroupolis in Northern Greece. Eight crew members asked for political asylum in Greece.

On December 7 Minister of foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu has called for the immediate issue eight Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece and seek refuge after the coup attempt in July.

January 26, 2017 the Supreme court of Greece ruled against the extradition of eight Turkish soldiers, which the Turkish government accuses of involvement in the attempted coup in July last year.
