For efficient decision-making in the UN Security Council must be radically reformed – in particular, a mechanism is needed to overcome the veto of the permanent members of the security Council. This was at a meeting of this body was declared by the Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya, reports the correspondent of UKRINFORM.
In his opinion, the work of the security Council ineffective for several reasons. First of all, this veto power of the permanent members.
“First, the veto of the permanent members of the Council means that decisions on the merits is possible only when the interests of the five does not just coincide, but, at least, do not overlap. In other cases, the Council remains paralyzed,” said Sorrel.
Moreover, according to him, in the absence of a mechanism to overcome the veto of the member entitled to do so, there is no incentive to work on a decision on a controversial issue.
Secondly, noted the representative of Ukraine, the implementation of adopted resolutions is always limited to the level of readiness of countries to comply with them. “This selective approach to implementation contributes to the ability of the Council to achieve a breakthrough in different situations,” said Sorrel.
Thirdly, according to the Deputy head of the foreign Ministry, the effectiveness of the security Council will increase when all member States will respect the UN Charter, norms and principles of international law.
We will remind, on December 19, the UN General Assembly approved an updated resolution on “the Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, Ukraine”. The resolution voted 70 countries, against 26 countries, 76 countries abstained.
