The U.S. government and the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE) made the Saturday statement, which require the aggressor country of Russia to find and punish the killers of prominent Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was shot in the Elevator of her house on the birthday of Russian President Vladimir Putin on 7 October 2006. It is reported by Voice of America.
“The activities of Politkovskaya revealed violations of human rights in Russia and the suffering of war victims in the North Caucasus. Mysterious murder of Politkovskaya, who had dual citizenship – American and Russian – and other journalists in Russia, as well as threats against journalists that show new abuses in Chechnya, only worsened the atmosphere of intimidation of the independent press,” – said the representative of Gosdepartamenta Heather Nauert.
“It is unacceptable that the organizers of the murder of Politkovskaya and other journalists remain at large. This vicious circle of impunity has a long lasting effect on the state of freedom of media in Russia”, – said the OSCE representative on freedom of the media, Harlem Desir.
It is noted that in the autumn edition of Dangerous Assignments, the Committee to protect journalists recognized Politkovskaya one of the most prominent representatives of freedom of expression in the media.
