Detained in Ukraine on Russia’s request ATU fighter from Georgia Gia Tsertsvadze filed a petition for refugee status. In 2015, it was also filed two applications for Ukrainian citizenship. This was reported by his lawyer Ksenia Prokonova at a press conference in Kiev.

In 2015 we submitted two applications for Ukrainian citizenship faced Tsertsvadze. One he filed personally, the second was filed with the signature of the then head of the SBU Valentin Nalyvaychenko, who requested Tsertsvadze citizenship for outstanding military merit. “These documents now, we find out,” said Prokonova.

“We have entered the procedure of granting refugee status, because the GII is really in danger from authorities. In the case of his extradition, he faces the death penalty. I think we don’t even wait for the court proceedings, he is simply lost in the territory of the Russian Federation. So give it is impossible,” said Prokonova.

The lawyer said that there was communication with the Ukrainian Interpol.

“Many ask, he continues (Tsertsvadze – ed.) to hang in the Interpol’s wanted list or not. There is such a thing as deactivation of the card (wanted, – ed.). That is why Gia won’t leave the territory of Ukraine”, – said Prokonova.

Also the lawyer noted that the Russian side did not provide the necessary volume of documents on charges Tsertsvadze.

January 15 in Kyiv Zhuliany airport was detained a citizen of Georgia, commando Gia Tsertsvadze, who fought on the side of ATO forces in the Donbass. The man was wanted by Interpol on Russia’s request. In Russia he is accused of murder. He Tsertsvadze said that the Russian side wanted him for his active participation in the fighting against the Russian aggressors in 2008.

Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko declared that international conventions give Ukraine grounds to refuse Russia’s extradition Tsertsvadze.

Recently Tsertsvadze was cancelled temporary arrest.
